About us

St Andrews is a friendly, welcoming church on the south side of the coastal Cumbrian town of Whitehaven. We are an Anglican church within the Evangelical tradition of the Church of England. We look to the Bible for guidance in all matters of faith, belief and behaviour - for us it is a light in the darkness that the Holy Spirit uses to inspire and inform the people of God. As people who have come to know Jesus through a personal faith, we are enjoying His forgiveness for our wrongdoing, the new start He offers - purpose in life, moral wholeness, hope for today and beyond death. These are His gifts to all who choose to follow Him. We would be delighted to welcome you if you are searching for a church to belong to, if you are visiting or simply curious.

What do we believe?

We are living in times of great change. There are many challenges to faith and lifestyle, especially as people re-interpret many of the basic Christian doctrines and relationships.

What we believe is immensely important, as A W Tozer once said, "Wrong notions about God soon rot the religion in which they appear" (The Knowledge of the Holy),  wrong beliefs often lead to wrong actions.

At St Andrew's we seek to be faithful to the 'faith once entrusted to the saints' (Jude1:3). Consequently, in the power of the Spirit and in fellowship with one another, we seek to follow God's created order in all matters of faith, doctrine, ethics, spirituality, sexuality and mutual care. As an expression of this our Church Council has voted to become a member of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters worldwide who find themselves the victims of Church leadership that is seeking to revise biblical moral standards and to force them to deny their convictions. Some are having to pay a heavy price - we want to say - we stand with you.

Thankfully Jesus came into the world to save people who are less than perfect, He understands how we all carry our own wounds, and fight our own hidden battles; church for us is a place where we recognise that we are all on a journey to becoming what God wants us to be; the only difference between Christians and non-Christians is that Christians have sought God's forgiveness and healing. We have no illusions about our need for God's ongoing love, help and support - if you feel that way too then you'll be at home amongst us! God welcomes all with joy - He then wants us to experience change and growth into the person we have been made to be.

Our faith is summed up beautifully in the Apostles and Nicene Creed.

The Nicene Creed
    We believe in one God,
    the Father, the Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth,undefined
    of all that is,undefined
    seen and unseen.
    We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
    the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
    God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
    of one Being with the Father;
    through him all things were made.
    For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
    was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
    and was made man.
    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
    he suffered death and was buried.
    On the third day he rose again
    in accordance with the Scriptures;
    he ascended into heaven
    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
    He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
    and his kingdom will have no end.
    We believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the Lord, the giver of life,
    who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
    who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
    who has spoken through the prophets.
    We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
    We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
    We look for the resurrection of the dead,
    and the life of the world to come.
    Amen
